Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme will investigate the development of alternative composite (cermet) materials to enhance/replace the current oxide emitter of the thermionic cathode as used in the electron gun of a VDU. The aim is to increase the emission current possible from such cathodes whilst preventing degradation of the emitting material due to resistance heating effects. Such developments are essential to match the performance of these cathodes with the requirements of applications in the areasof high resolution and high brightness-contrast VDUs.The research will entail the development of a detailed understanding of emission and charge transport mechanisms, interfacial phenomena and microstructure-property relationships in these novel materials, together with the development of novel techniques to enable the engineering and characterisation of appropriate microstructures..
