Summary on Grant Application Form
Video sequences of the interior of a room will be obtained. Recently developed techniques in computer vision will be used to extract salient image features and match them from one image to the next. The information in the image matches will then be used to determine and then monitor the camera calibration, and to construct a 3D description of the scene geometry. A human operator will monitor systems performance and correct gross errors in the inferred geometry. Robust statistics will be used to detect and eliminate bad matches and non-linear filtering will be used to increase the accuracy of the estimated camera calibration and scene geometry. The system will contain industrial standard CAD models of familiar objects such as tables, chairs and light fittings. Objects in the scene will be identified and located by a top down fot of the CAD models to the recovered scene geometry. The path of the camera through the room will be inferred.
