Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will be centred around the new Ultra Low Energy Ion Beam System in the Salford Physics Department. This 1M system was the focus of a LINK Programme to build an ultra low energy ion implanter in collaboration with the US Applied Materials Cop. The equipment is unique and promises unprecedented control in the preparation of thin films and multilayers by DIRECT ion beam deposition at variable energies. It is capable of spanning the deposition conditions from magnetron sputtering to MBE. The materials chosen for this pilot project are Fe,Co/Si layered systems with an interest in the structure/property relationship in hybrid magnetic/semiconductor thin film systems. The microstructure of the materials will be characterised by in-situ and ex-situ techniques including SPM, XPS, electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction and reflectometry. Magnetic and electrical transport investigations will include magnetometry by AGFM and conductivity and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) measurements.
