Summary on Grant Application Form
In 1992 the investigators obtained funds to design a UK CRG beamline at ESRF and in 1994 they received EPSRC funding and ESRF approval to construct it. The construction phase terminates in September 1997 and funds are now sought to operate the facility for a five year period for thebenefit of UK scientists primarily interested in x-ray and magnetic high resolution studies and manage it for the UK users. Synchrotron radiation is a unique probe of magnetic structure, offering information that complements that obtained by wellestablished techniques such as neutron diffraction and a growing community in the UK and worldwide is exploiting this. I le UK facility will have many features superior to national facilities in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, but will provide more immediate and more sustained access than is possible on the highly oversubscribed public beamlines at ESRF.The facility will be a focus for a wide range of diffraction studies, for example of fabricated magnetic multilayer structures as well as bulk magnetic materials. It will allow the magnetic properties of actinide and transuranic compounds to be studied together with structural studies of surfaces, interfaces, non-linear optical materials, superconductors and soft matter.
