Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose an integrated programme of research into the magnetism of rare earth thin films and multilayers using magnetotransport and magnetooptical techniques. Samples will be provided by the Oxford LaMBE group. Transport and magneto-transport measurements will be made in both the CIP and CPP geometry to search for GMR and superzone effects due to the superlattice structure. BLS and MOKE measurements will be used to characterise anisotrpoy, interlayer coupling and magnetoelastic effects. We propose to use a wide range of magnetic techniques to characterise new materials (e.g. rare earth - transition metal intermetallics) as new directions for film growth are explored.
