Summary on Grant Application Form
The investigator will modify existing finite-element software to allow for relative movement resulting in substantial changes in geometry, and non-sinusoidal power supply, to facilitate the modelling of electromagnetic shakers. They will then validate their model by comparison with test results provided by the industrial collaborators, Ling Dynamic Systems Ltd. A variety of optimisation methods will be assessed against the particular device and model, and also the highly parallel computing faciltiies available. The most suitable of these will be implemented, and combined with the underlying finite-element model. The resulting code will be run in order to optimise an existing design. The optimised design will then be built and tested in order to quantify the benefits of the optimisation. Finally, recent finite-element techniques, such as domain decomposition, will be exploited with the aim of speeding up the code so that it can be run on a workstation.
