Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is aimed at developing new processes for the almost waste free functionalization of low to medium molecular weight alkene end functionalized macromolecules. The programme will address the factors that effect the success of polymer supported reactions carried out on these important industrial materials. Polymer supports will be prepared that have varying pore structures resulting from changes in the amount and type of porogen present in their preparation. The supports will be functionalized with ligands capable of complexing metals that can act as catalysts for either epoxidation of alkenes or radical addition to alkenes. All of the supported catalysts will be examined for loss of activity by carrying out the reactions at least ten times. It is intended to carry out the epoxidations and radical additions on the following alkene ended materials: Oligoisobutylene, oligoethylene oxide and oligosiloxane. These materials represent a wide range of chemical structures, so that it will be possible to assess the generality of these processes. Important aspects of the work will be studies on the effect of:the size of the substrate macromolecule; the pore structure; the chemical structure of the support and the chemical structure of the substrate.
