The proposed study is a contribution towards improving integration between briefing, design and construction so as to reduce construction coast and improve competitiveness. In-depth studies of interdisciplinary design teamworking in three well-known organisations will be undertaken and prototype models of teamworking will be tested with graduate students on the pioneering course in Interdisciplinary Design in the Build Environment t Cambridge University. The research will contribute to knowledge about the conditions necessary to effective teamworking, with particular reference to individual perceptions of professional roles. The achievement of successful communication and the nature of design support systems that are required to encourage and promote teamworking. The study will set out a model defining the conditions required for effective collaboration, and will contain a number of recommendation for the education and training of building design professionals for their institution, and for those seeking to provide design tools to support them.
