Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to upgrade the data-processors in the Lancaster nonlinear laboratory. They are used to support wide-ranging, mostly EPSRC-supported, research on nonlinear science and fluctuation theory. The existing facilities are based on Nicolet minicomputers dating from the 1970's, which now need to be replaced because of: unreliability and increasing difficulty over servicing; their insufficient memory and speed for some current and planned applications; and the need to bring our facilities up to contemporary standards to reflect the advances made in computing over the last 20 years. It is proposed to replace the Nicolets with 6 separate PC-based systems. In doing so, a major software-development exercise will be needed. Once the enterprise has been completed, we will have created a system with greatly enhanced capabilities, allowing eg for: continuous fast data capture and analysis; easy software re-configuration to meet new problems; vastly improved facilities for data-processing and presentation; and new possibilities for fast, convenient, systematic, data storage and retrieval. Contributions towards the cost of the operation have already been received from the Royal Society, who funded a pilot project; the University will also contribute if the present proposal is supported.
