Summary on Grant Application Form
Vortex structure have been encountered in several reversal processes and dominate reversal in thin patterned samples. The calculations will provide a complimentary understanding to micromagnetic simulations. The understanding of the vortices observed recently in bulk films will be a key element. Recent experiments show that surface steps couple strongly to domain walls and provide an extra source of magnetic anisotropy. Both the shape anisotropy and pinning will be calculated. The recent domain wall elasticity theory of Kashuba & Prokrevsk will be used to calculate nucleation and keep rates of domains and walls in perpendicular media.
