Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose detailed experimental (STM) studies of the deposition and diffusion of size selected metal (eg Au, Ag) clusters on metal surfaces (eg Pt(111), Au(110)) and graphite. The experiments will employ a mass-selected cluster beam source together with a novel low temperature UHV STM for in situ studies of cluster deposition, diffusion and thin film growth as a function of cluster size, kinetic energy, deposition rate and surface temperature. The experiments will shed light on the basic processes occurring in the cluster-surface impact as well as the mechanisms of diffusion and growth on the surface. We also propose to investigate the deposition and growth modes of size-selected metal clusters at surface steps (eg on graphite); diffusion of clusters to the steps and preferential adsorption there is expected to produce cluster wires . The structural studies of the clusters will be complemented by spectroscopic measurements of the cluster plasmons with high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Deposition of mass-selected clusters on surfaces underpins a wide range of potential application of cluster-based thin films .
