Summary on Grant Application Form
A laser with a steerable output beam, for use as the head in a LIDAR system, will be constructed. A Fabry-Perot laser will feed a multimode interference coupler which will split the beam into up to 30 single mode ridge waveguides. Each waveguide will contain an independently controlled Electro-optic modulator, making it possible to control the phase of the beam from each waveguide and the direction of the output beam from the facet at the end of the waveguides. The laser will have a target output power of 100mW with a linewidth of 1.5mhz. Since the linewidth in standard devices started to broaden above 10 to 30 mW, novel devices with a large optical mode will be made to reduce the peak intensity and, hence, non-linear behaviour leading to linewidth re-broadening. A relatively thick waveguide core will reduce the peak intensity and an extended passive cavity, integrated using quantum well intermixing within the laser section, will increase the cavity lifetime and reduce the linewidth. To achieve 100mW it may be necessary to integrate the laser with an optical amplifier. Intermixing will also be used in order to realise low losses in the beam steering sections of the device.
