Microwave fibre-optic communication links have many advantages compared to conventional coaxial or waveguide links and we are therefore likely to see their increased use in the future, particularly for microwave signal distribution in cellular communication systems. To fully exploit these advantages signal processing should be performed while the signal is still in the optical modulated form.The controlled amplitude and group delay characteristics of complex in-fibre Bragg grating devices make them an ideal candidate for performing passive microwave signal processing in the optical domain. It is the aim of this project to investigate the application of fibre Bragg gratings to microwave signal processing and to design, fabricate and evaluate new passive devices exploiting the fibre Bragg grating fabrication technology and experience which we have built up at Aston University. Particular processing functions which will be investigated include microwave carrier suppression, various microwave transversal bandpass filter designs and optical waveform sampling. the benefits of this technology are the inherent fibre compatibility and the ease and cheapness of fabricating devices to a high tolerance which will enable them to offer significant performance advantages over the alternatives.
