Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to develop and extend our research effort in studying organic materials and magnetic oxides using ?SR, a technique which we have demonstrated can provide much important and interesting information. We plan to extend our studies of nitronyl nitroxides to organic meta-magnets, organic frustrated spin systems (eg kagom+ antiferromagnets), organics spin-Peierls materials and other organic systems. We shall continue our studies of spin excitations in conducting polymers. We have recently begun a study of magnetism in transition metal oxides, focusing initially on La2-xSrxNiO4+- because of its relevance to understanding superconductivity in La2-xSrxNiO4+-. This will be extended to various perovskites such as La2-xSrxNiO4+- which show colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). There is a complex interplay in these systems between real space ordering of holes, CMR, magnetism and superconductivity and a unified picture of the behaviour of these materials has yet to emerge. Our experience to date indicates that ?SR provides unique information concerning local magnetic behaviour in both organic molecular systems and complex magnetic oxides and will make an important contribution to understanding.
