Boundaries lubricants play a crucial role in reducing friction and wear in a wide range of applications. Despite the importance of boundary lubrication, little is known about how boundary lubricants function on a molecular scale. We propose to use the non-linear optical technique of sum-frequency spectroscopy to obtain in situ vibrational spectra of monolayer films under pressure and shear. The feasibility of this approach has been demonstrated for Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers. The ultimate aim of the project is to understand how thin organic films respond to pressure and shear, how they dissipate energy and how their microscopic structure influences the macroscopic tribological properties of a contact.
