This research proposal seeks to develop an entirely new methodology for implementing signal processing functions in analogue VLSI. The methodology exploits a pulse signalling mechanism to represent signal values and simple analogue circuit techniques to perform signal processing. The resultant circuits are electronically programmable and ideally suited to Field Programmable Analogue Arrays (FPAAs). The industrial collaborator, Pilkington Micro-electronics (PMeL) has designed the world's first commercial FPAA device and is therefore an ideal collaborator in this research.The research aims to investigate the use of these techniques to implement programmable analogue filters in VLSI - building on a successful prototype VLSI device already implemented by the applicant. Furthermore, this proposal aims to extend the technique to implement the signal processing functions that are typically proposed for FPAAs. This will allow an assessment of pulse based signal processing techniques for the implementation of FPAAs.The research program will develop new circuit ideas and demonstrate their operation in analogue VLSI. The final VLSI device produced will be used to demonstrate pulse based signal processing in a real world application.
