Summary on Grant Application Form
The project concerns advanced processing machinery for cutting of hard and brittle materials by superimposing power ultrasonics. These advances are possible due to the use of totally new nonlinear modes of oscillation and the production of intensive and controllable vibro-impact interaction in cutting area. The research challenge is in the exciting and maintaining of recently discovered nonlinear boundary conditions. The feasibility is achieved with the help of electronic feedback and active matching between oscillating system and dynamic loads. New ultrasonically assisted cutting machinery will be produced which drastically improves the accuracy of treatment and surface quality through control of cutting process and reduction of cutting forces. This will also increase the durability of cutters and reduce the noise. The development of this process will impact on the general design of machine-tools by reducing the drive force machine weight and dimensions together with the need for cooling the cutting process.
