The proposed research seeks to combine the techniques of wavelet decomposition and waveform-pass filtering within a single pre-processing system which can be applied generally in radio data communication receivers to combat the effects of non-Gaussian (particularly impulsive) and band-limited noise types. The essential objective of the pre-processing system is to whiten the noise and maximise the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) prior to subsequent multi-functional processing. Synchronisation should be the most robust element of any data transmission system's operation; consequently, a real-time DSP-based, system will be implemented to enable the performance improvement of a multi-functional synchroniser/demodulator achievable via the use of the pre-processing system to be demonstrated over real radio links. The potential of the techniques proposed has been established via an initial feasibility study of the wavelet decomposition technique which has indicated that typical performance gains in excess of 10-20dB can be obtained with respect to more conventional forms of non-linear processing (limiting) techniques applied to impulsive channels; in addition, a simulation study of waveform-pass filtering has demonstrated its ability to increase the SNRs of sampled data signals, where the noise samples are correlated due to band-limiting.
