Approximately 30 million scrap tyres are generated each year in the UK. About 50% are put to secondary use, retreaded, recycled or incinerated with energy recovery. The remaining 50% are stockpiled or dumped and some landfilled resulting in a waste of a resource. This project seeks to investigate the process of pyrolysis of scrap tyres to produce high value products. The high value products include: High value speciality chemicals such as styrene, limonene, indene, xylene and naphthalene found in significant concentrations in the derived light oil fraction. Upgrading of the tyre derived char via acid washing to remove the high ash content followed by activation to produce activated carbon.
