Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a programme of magnetic studies of vortex pinning and creep in high-Tc superconductors using our 12T VSM, SQUID magnetometers and ac susceptibility rigs. The effect of varying intrinsic parameters of the material (e.g. anisotropy) and of the pinning defect structure on the vortex phase diagram will be investigated by measurements on high quality single crystals (YBCO and Tl-based high-Tc) and aligned powders. We will develop equipment to characterise high-Tc materials in transverse fields up to 7T which will enable us to make detailed investigation of angle dependencies, in particular for the study of the interactions of the vortex system with coherent, extended defects such as twin planes and crystal boundaries.
