Summary on Grant Application Form
We wish to develop the theory of photonic materials, and to write computer codes that will predict their properties, In particular there is a need to look at realistic structures which will make severe demands on current methodologies. We propose to develop the `orderN' methods which can be applied to very complex systems. We already have a successful track record for developing and distributing codes, and our previous work will be the starting point for the new program. It is also our plan to exploit the new codes ourselves, in parallel with the development process. Our application of the codes will act as a test bed for their optimisation and user friendliness. In particular we plan to study 1) device fashioned out of materials which are themselves structured 2) develop a quantitative theory of the scanning optical microscope 3) extend our work on photonic microwave materials to more elaborate structures.
