The annual cost of fuel consumed by heavy goods vehicles in the UK is 4 billion, and the annual cost of road damage caused by theses vehicles is 2 billion. Tyre and suspension design have a strong influence on rolling resistance and road damage, and also on roll-over stability. The aim of the proposed research is to improve understanding of the influence of tyre and suspension design on these performance criteria. A rolling drum tyre test facility at SP Tyres UK Ltd will be the basis of a fundamental investigation into the mechanisms of rolling resistance of heavy vehicles. Mathematical models of the tyre and the suspension will be used to investigate the conflict between the performance criteria, and to estimate the cost savings achievable through improved design. The research is necessary to ensure that future developments in tyres and suspensions result in an optimum balance of conflicting requirements and ths minimum overall cost to the UK.
