Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will be carried out to develop an innovative computer-aided design tool based on the standard aerospace CATIA CAD package. This will be deigned to provide accurate aircraft component manipulator co-ordinated and enable NDT sensor data to be presented to the component model stored within the tool. The ability of the tool to supply accurate data to the component handling manipulator will be evaluated and optimised by a series of practical trials. The main research content consists of four main areas of activity: 1. Data pre-processing of individual NDT images to achieve adequate levels of data representation for feature discrimination and extraction, 2. Spatial geometry, resolution and CAD model matching to enable integrated semantic/spatial database kernal development with spatial object representation consisting of hierarchical regular and nonregular representations of individual spatial features, 3. Data fusion obtained using object-oriented representation of tow-dimensional image space representation supporting one or more canonical problem-solving forms; with the best performance characteristics of correlation based and functional evaluation problem-solving (e.g. fuzzy rule-based reasoning, Bayesian inference and multi-hypothesis testing) adapted to obtain the fused image data set, and 4. Lossless image data compression based on predictive coding and conditional entropy coding.
