Summary on Grant Application Form
Magnetic second harmonic generation (MSHG) is an exiting new technique for experimental characterisation of magnetic surfaces and interfaces. Intrinsic interfacial sensitivity, strong magnetic dependence and the deep penetration depth of light combine to form a powerful probe of buried interfaces. These play a major role in determining both the magnetic and transport properties of magnetic multilayers, key components of many modern technologies such as sensors and recording. The utility of the MSHG has been proven in several experimental studies, there is now a need for theory, to develop a detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying MSHG, to aid the interpretation of experiment, and to identify potential applications. We propose to implement the theory of MSHG within the framework of versatile, efficient ab-initio electronic structure calculations. We shall investigate how MSHG may be used to probe detailed interface electronic and magnetic structure. We shall investigate the influence of interfacial roughness, intermixing and impurities on MSHG. We shall investigate how adsorbates quench surface contributions. In this work we shall participate in direct collaboration with experimentalists, focusing on key problems in the further development of MSHG for interfacial characterisation.
