The object of the program is to develop physically realistic and quantitatively accurate models of friction in cold metal rolling. Previous work has illustrated the important roles played by the lubricant and the roll and workpiece roughness. However recent experiments show that, while qualitatively correct, these models simplify the analysis too much to be quantitatively useful. To generate a new friction law, the tribology of the process will be examined in more detail. In particular the new model will model the statistical nature of surfaces by including components of roughness with a range of wavelengths and amplitudes. The work will examine how changes in the roughness geometry affect the flattening of asperities and the flow of oil between the roll and workpiece. These results, together with a new model for friction with very thin films, will be incorporated into a theoretical mill model for rolling of thick strip and foil. Predictions from this mill model will be compared with measurements from new mill trials to be undertaken at Alcan. The model of friction derived from this work will allow industry to be able to predict mill behaviour more accurately, thus improving mill productivity and strip quality.
