Air injection can offer unique benefits and technical opportunities for improved oil recovery in many candidate reservoirs, Interest for post waterflooded deep, light oil reservoir in the North Sea/Westerm Europe is primarily motivated by the opportunity to use air as a cheap source of injection gas, Oxygen in the injected air reacts with hydrocarbons in the reservoir (Low Temperature Oxidation) producing in situ nitrogen and/or flue gases for immiscible or miscible gas displacement,. The research aims to identify the reaction regimes and relevant low temperature and high temperature oxidation (LTO and HTO) kinetics of a few selected North Sea light crude oils for the purpose of developing a composite screen-reaction model. An accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) and a specially developed DISC reactor will be used to investigate the crude oil exothermicity and obtain measured kinetic parameters. The model will enable prediction as to whether a potential candidate reservoir is suitable for air injection - primarily LTO, to generate in situ displacement gases. The LTO kinetics model developed can be used for numerical modelling studies of reservoirs, thereby enabling energy recovery efficiency assessment to be made.
