This proposal is concerned with an environmentally friendly method of removing magnesium and manganese from aluminium using a novel recessed electrode cell. From published values of the electrode potentials of aluminium, magnesium and manganese in fused salts, excellent separation should occur. The advantage of the recessed electrode cell is that the metals are well stirred, giving high mass transfer rates, and the anode to cathode distance is a few mm, resulting in low applied voltages and very low energy consumption. Compared to existing chlorination technology it is silent, non polluting and produces metals of immediate commercial value. The electrochemistry and kinetics of the various electrorefining reactions will be investigated. As well as the scientific aspects of the research, it is intended to evaluate the performance of the cell in the laboratory in order to interest British industry in this technology. In addition to the refining of aluminium, the magnesium produced would be welcomed by magnesium die-casters, an alternative to supplies from primary producers.
