Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims to synthesis a new class dendrimer catalytic materials. The materials will combine the advantages of homogeneous catalysts (precise control over number and location of catalytic sites leading to good activity) and heterogeneous catalysts (easy separation from the reactant mixture). The programme will use a novel combination to two emerging areas of chemistry; dendrimer and polyhedral silsesquioxane synthesis, to produce macromolecules of sufficient size that they will be separable from reaction streams using ultrafiltration techniques. The external surface of the dendrimers will be functionalised using the silsesquioxanes to produce accessible catalytic sites of the required activity. The silsesquioxanes I will use are already known to be good homogeneous catalysts and are also similar to the building blocks present in the economically important zeolite catalysts. The resulting dendrimer materials will be tested for catalytic activity in a number of specifically targeted reactions. The synthesis used in the programme is based on well known chemistry and has a high probability of success. This new synthesis of functional polymers has the potential to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of current catalysts, especially when they involve high value materials (eg precious metal catalysts) that are difficult or impossible to recycle.
