This proposal is aimed at reducing the enormous cost of tooling for the Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding process by substituting stainless steel tools with 'disposable' ceramic tool inserts. New application are often abandoned r delayed due to the tooling start-up costs and the lack of confidence that such ceramic tool containing all the necessary component geometry is sought. Such a tool will require a homogenous inner surface and allow mass configuration . following a world-wide documentation search, a list of possible ceramics will be produced. Small 'model' inserts will be made and tested. The most successful ceramic will be used to produce and appropriate 'real' aircraft component tool. The focus will be to develop an inexpensive generic family of tools. The technology may then be transferred to composite tool design, thereby harnessing the benefits gained through the SPF exercise.
