The procedures to present catastrophic crack propagation in pressurised pipelines are inapplicable to the ribbed shells and panels found in airframes and aeroengines. Dynamic plasticity and dynamic fracture mechanics will be applied to provide a mathematical model based on an energy balance approach. The model will be supported by experimental observations. Fast crack growth will be initiated by impact at the edge of pre-notched pre-stressed aluminium alloy plain and ribbed panels. It will be recorded by ultra high speed photography while strain gauges will monitor the strain in the target. From a refined mathematical model embodying the experimental results, design guidelines will be suggested.
