Summary on Grant Application Form
This research will investigate the fabrication of two-dimensional photonic crystal material in the form of a fine fibre, and how this material can be used to design and fabricate low-loss optical fibres with new and previously unattainable characteristics. We have recently shown that by using silica/air photonic crystal material beyond cut-off as a cladding material to surround a pure silica core, one can form a low-loss single mode optical fibre. The first part of the present project will be to establish the properties of this new fibre (it is clear from initial analysis that interesting and useful features result from the interaction of the evanescent field with the microstructured cladding material), and to develop a model for the dependence of these properties on the photonic crystal microstructure. In the second stage we will extend our theoretical study to establish designs for useful and realisable fibres, while further developing the technology required for fabricating these structures to allow us to produce fibre with previously unattainable properties.
