The project will involve research and experimentation to determine strategies for the successful integration of adaptive search algorithms and complementary soft computing techniques with the British Aerospace CAPS suite of preliminary design evaluation software. This will result in the automatic concurrent manipulation of preliminary design options and related mathematical models for the generation of high performance design solutions within an acceptable period of time. A primary objective of the project is the recognition of the generic aspects of this whole-system adaptive search integration and the subsequent development of generic techniques and strategies at prototype level that can be integrated with the related design stages across the engineering disciplines.Experimental strategies currently under development with the PEDC will form the basis of the initial integration with the CAPS environment. These include cluster-oriented genetic algorithms and dual-agent approaches for the identification of high-performance regions and for satisfactory search across design hierarchies described by both discrete and continuous variables. Multi-agent aspects will play a major-role as both adaptive and classical search/optimisation techniques are combined within a co-operation framework with appropriate information exchange between individual search agents.
