The cost to UK industry of corrosion of refractory linings in iron and steelmaking, glass and cement production runs to M. In this project the influence of refractories microstructure on corrosion rates and mechanisms will be examined. Both oxide- and carbon-bonded model refractories with controlled microstructures will be fabricated and attacked under controlled conditions by simple model liquid aluminosilicates. The kinetics of attack will be measured using static crucible and dynamic finger and rotary slag tests and the thermodynamic equilibrium for the solid/liquid/vapour system calculated and compared to the corroded microstructures to give an insight into the corrosion mechanism. Commercial refractories supplied by industry will also be examined to try and link information from the model systems to those in production. Reasons for poor corrosion resistance arising from the microstructure will be determined enabling more corrosion resistant refractories to be manufactured.
