Summary on Grant Application Form
In part 1, the applicant will follow up the discovery of the first well characterised bifluoride (HF2) complex of a transition metal. Synthetic routes are proposed to a variety of complexes containing this ligand; all routes involve mild reagents. The structures of these complexes will be studied in detail by NMR (solution) and crystallography. Several classes of reaction are anticipated: bifluoride as a leaving group, fluorination of organic molecules, conversion to bridging FHF, conversion to metal fluorides. In part two the principal goal will be the development of effective catalysis for C-F bond activation. Catalysts are proposed based on the applicants discoveries of sub-ambient C-F bond activation. The understanding of the mechanism of these processes will be underpinned by studies of redox processes thought to be crucial to C-F activation.
