Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research is to make accurate measurements of the structure of key liquid semiconducting and metallic alloys using neutron diffraction and X-ray techniques. The information obtained will be used:- as a critical test of the current computer simulation techniques as a method of predicting the atomic and electronic structure of semiconductor materials.- to investigate the structural changes in a liquid as a metal insulator transition takes place.- to promote further understanding of the important mechanisms of electron and ionic transport in liquids.- to pursue recent theoretical predictions of the consequences of fast ionic motion on the electronic transport in liquids and superionic solids. An additional aim of the proposed research is to investigate the feasibility of combined neutron and x-ray techniques for determining the structure of disordered materials.
