The aim of the work is to compare the rates of hydrolysis of a biodergradable solid substrate (municipal solid waste) under conditions where the hydrolysate, and soluble intermediates in the digestion process, are firstly held within the reaction mixture and secondly hydraulically stripped from that mixture. To achieve this three designs of reactor will be used: packed bed (PB) ; conventional single pass (SP); and hydraulic flush (HF). The operational modes of the bio-reactors will allow a detailed kinetic evaluation of the hydolysis reactions so as to determine if a feedback inhibition is taking place. Data collection and analysis procedures have been designed so as to determine accurate mass balances under both steady state (SPR and HFR) and batch (PB) operating conditions. It is anticipated that the results of the work will explain earlier results where the apparent rate of solids destruction in the anaerobic process were doubled by means of maintaining independent solids and liquid retention times within a flushing bio-reactor in which the recirculated leachate had undergone a separate treatment to remove biodegradable intermediate products.
