The proposal is for a three year programme of research into methods of maximising the flexibility of the new generation of massively decentralised independently driven machinery. The research will involve the generation of systematic methods for liberalising and utilising the flexibility of such machines by:1. Postponing structural binding during the design process.2. Developing a vertically integrated approached to the synchronisation of sets of tightly integrated drive clusters.3. Increase machine flexibility through on-line determination of control structure.4. Developing hierarchical logic structures for synchronisation and adaptation leading to intelligent control.The aim is to provide a sound theoretic basis for methods of exploiting flexibility in such machines. The method will be proved by demonstration applications in a unique laboratory facility which will be created for investigating novel configurations of massively decentralised independent drives and loads, including virtual subsystems. The theoretical work and practical applications will be of direct interest to machinery design and control systems industries.
