The purpose of this research is to investigate a systems approach is to propose a suspension configuration and then to analyse its properties. We will seek to do the reverse, namely to ask if a certain behaviour is possible or not in principle and, if so, how to realise it. We propose to consider both passive and active suspension and indeed to give special attention to the boundary of achievable performance between passive and active systems. The approach to question of synthesis will draw on classical multi-port network ideas (for passive suspension) and modern control design techniques (for active suspension).By taking a synthesis viewpoint to suspension design which draws on techniques from other areas it is hoped that better choices could be made between different suspension types (e.g. active, semi-active, passive), and that the new approaches may be highlighted. This study of fundamental issues in suspension design is an attempt to complement the strengths of the UK automotive manufacturing sector and to aid with medium and long-term competitiveness.
