Summary on Grant Application Form
LJMU will measure surface temperatures using fast response thermocouples, forces, power and removal rate for a range of grinding conditions with selected ferrous materials, Tests will be carries out to determine the conditions necessary to achieve a neutral stress, neither compresssive or tensile, with CBN and conventional grinding whells. A model will be developed to predict this condition and will be validated by grinding experiments. Specimens will be prepared for the OU under a range of grinding conditions who will undertake in-depth analysis of stress distribution by XRD and neutron diffraction. The effect of reducing failures in critical components and achieveing a technique which avoids the need for destructive tests of highly expensive components.
