This proposal aims to illustrate the importance of two-electron (anionic) cyclisations as a fundamental method for the synthesis of cyclic amines. Organolithiums alpha to nitrogen will be generated by tin-lithiums alpha to nitrogen will be generated by tin-lithium exchange. The cyclization (onto an alkene, alkyne or carbonyl group) is expected to be stereocontrolled at the carbanion centre and the new chiral centre(s). This will allow the stereo- and enantio-selective synthesis of monocyclic amines, such as kainic acid and analogues, bycyclic amines, such as indolizidine 209B and slaframine, and bridged bicyclic amines, such as tropanes and epibatidine analogues.
