Summary on Grant Application Form
No current problem in road traffic accidents is larger than that of accidents at urban give-way junctions. With new solutions, many if not most of these accidents may be preventable. But the new solutions need to be adapted to the real needs of drivers, and, before they are are implemented or even developed to the point of implementation, there needs to be clear evidence that the solutions envisaged can bring substantial benefits.Work is proposed here to evaluate the effectiveness of two versions of an advanced system for preventing accidents at juctions. The new system to be teseted is a warning system to assist drivers emerging from the minor road by advising them when it is not safe to pull out. The system will be tested in tow versions: an in-vehicle information system and a roadside information system. The high-technology solutions will be compared with more traditional approaches by carrying out experimentation in a carefully controlled environment. The facility to be used is the EPSRC Advanced Driving Simultor at the University of Leeds.
