Summary on Grant Application Form
Blastfurnace slag (BFS), a product of iron making, is electrochemically reducing. When blended with Portland cements, the resulting paste pore water can have an Eh value of as low as -600 mV compared with the mildly oxidising conditions prevalent in normal Portland cement pastes. dc polarisation studies and supporting electron microscopic analysis have shown that this effect has a negative influence on the passivation mechanism operating for steel yet, despite this, BFS-containing concrete structures have good durability in aggressive media. The proposed short project aims to investigate this anomaly using ac impedance spectroscopy, interpretation of which will be partly based on a recently developed equivalent circuit model which correlated microstructural features with impedance data.
