Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal concentrates on those physical phenomena in Bose-condensates in atom traps which are distinct to those in superfluid helium, in particular the phenomena associated with the expansion or collapse of a droplet of atoms. The influence of the 'normal fluid' of thermal excitations on the expansion or collapse is currently not understood - for instance whether the degree of condensation changes with expansion and whether the excitations maybe considered adiabatically. The pivotal calculation is the thorough calculation of the excitations of the initial and expanding droplet. The requires calculations beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The results of this calculation will subsequently be applied to an expanding droplet. Finally the calculations will be repeated for the metastable case of negative scattering lengths (eg Li) where the lifetime due to tunnelling or thermal activation requires knowledge of the excitations.
