Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will be joint between the two departments, involving a systematic growth programme of infrared and visible thin film laser host materials. The focus of the work will be two-fold. Firstly we will optimise the quality of the material for waveguide applications. This will involve minimising the particulate content, by use of a synchronised pulsed gas jet technique, and also by ensuring extremely precise temperature control, through the development of a raster-scanned CO2 laser heating technique. Additionally we will install on-line RHEED and ion-beam assist facilitates for in-situ substrate cleaning and film analysis. Secondly, after suitable substrate-film combinations have been identified and sourced, we will grow epitaxial films of doped chalcogenide semiconductors and doped garnets. If suitable targets become available during the grant, we will additionally consider growth from doped fluoride hosts. The final part of the programme will be to develop and optimise infrared and near-infrared laser waveguide structures within these thin films, suitable for diode pumping.l
