Wear debris induced osteolysis is a major cause of long term failure in artificial joints. It is predicted that ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene will remain the material of choice for acetabular cups in the majority of patients for the next fifteen years. Recent recognition that sterilisation by irradiation in air produces degradation and increased wear of UHMWPE, has prompted the development of numerous alternative processes and sterilisation routes for UHMWPE. Funds are requested to support 50% of the cost of a UK manufactured hip joint simulator. The simulator will be used to investigate the wear debris produced from different types of UHMWPE and to study the wear performance of a new design of non spherical acetabular cup, which reduces the area of polymer being worn. Most importantly, the study will use novel methods to quantify both the mass and frequency distributions of wear particles as a function of their size, in order to predict their osteolytic potential.
