Ultra-thin 'pinhole-free' films can be prepared from radio-frequency-induced, non-equilibrium plasmas of organic compounds. The process is attractive, as an exact control over film thickness can be exercised, film deposition is uniform and 'clean'. One of us (RDS) has demonstrated the fabrication of films that feature a high degree of retention of the chemical functionality of the monomeric precursor. However, our understanding of the relationship between plasma environment and thin-film deposition is unsatisfactory. This application will enable us to capitalise on progress made under awards GR/F 77446 and GR/H 6391. The central theme is a mechanistic study of plasma polymerisation, by means of mass spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, and molecular modelling. The work will be carried out by a senior research fellow and a second research assistant. It will provide: a training in an exciting, emerging technology, new scientific knowledge, and address issues that need to be resolved before commercial exploitation.
