Summary on Grant Application Form
New polymeric materials offer an alternative to ceramic structures for external line insulation and for the housing of gapless surge arresters. Confidence in the viability of non-ceramic insulatio (NCI) needs both field experience and basic research, This research proposed contributions in two main areas. Ageing preconditioning and artificiaol pollution testing of NCI and techniques of on0line condition monitoring of NCI, including polymeric housed surge arresters and discharge detection under polluted conditions. Feasibility studies have already been completed. The technical interest in utilising the non-ceramic meterials for air0insulated structures is based upon the mechanical properties, hydrophobicity and heat-shrink capabilities. The sucess of these materials especially depends upon maintenance of their surface properties, both at internal interfaces with ZnO elements (surge arresters) and fibre-glass rods (insulators), and their externally exposed surfaces. Infra-red and electric field monitoring techniques are proposed. The research aims to contribute to improvements in security of electrical supply with consequent economic and social benefits. In addition, live line working procedures require knowledge of NCI conditions in service.
