Summary on Grant Application Form
In an effort to understand the interaction of forced heating and cooling systems with the natural ventilation of real buildings, we will carry out a series of analogue laboratory experiments. We will train a postgraduate research assistant to use aqueous saline solutions to model the interaction of doorway and window exchange flows with convective plumes which rise or sink from sources of heat or cooling located at various places within a room. Using sophisticated flow visualisation and measurement equipment, we will monitor the evolution of the density field and the magnitude of the flows in the room, as well as identify regions of mixing, and also regions of stagnant fluid. Simultaneously, we will develop mathematical and physical models of the flow processes, comparing the results with the experiments, and applying the models to improve the design and implementation of heating and cooling systems within real buildings.
