In this proposal we set out to develop a new family of immobilised chiral catalysts with the view to produce materials not only of fundamental academic interest but also of significant commercial relevance. The catalysts are to be characterised structurally, spectroscopically and catalystically by a range of physical techniques, including, where appropriate, in situ techniques. Carbonyl cluster complexes tethered inside the mesopores are used as probe molecules for catalysts/pore-wall homogeneous chemical modelling and computational techniques. Polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes are used as MCM-41 surface models and will provide the basis for a unique methodology where heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts are developed in parallel. The experimental results on structure and selectivity will be incorporated into the computational studies and form the foundation for the development of a predictive model for chiral selectivities.The combination of the three different approaches allows deep insight into the fundamental chemical phenomena which can be used to subtly engineer the appropriate catalystic centres to gain maximum selectivity and activity.
