Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed sensor is based on the photoacoustic principle which has already been sucessful in trials at the lower concentrations of produced water outfalls and operated in the range of 1 to 800 mg/l in the laboratory. The specific research objectives are (a) to establish the charateristcis of the photoacoustic response at higher concentrations of multicomponent hydrocarbns, (b) to characterise the photoacoustic response for dissolved and dispersed components (c) to further develop the measuring head and basic calibration to operate in the range of 0 to 10,000 mg/l or higher (d) to ruggedise for operation in the more severe environment of hydrocyclones (including an option for ultrasonic cleaning) (e) to construct a test facility to realistically simultate the in-line conditions (f) to acquire reliable experimental data to develop calibration routines for this application and (g) to achieve the operation of a prototype demonstrator instrument which could be taken offshore in a suitable enclosure for field trials.
